The Vicar of Dibley Hits The Stage

The BBC’s hit comedy series The Vicar of Dibley takes to the Rangiora Town Hall this summer in a fantastic theatrical adaptation, and I had the lucky opportunity to get a sneak preview.

The play takes the form of three acts, each containing one of the most-loved of the series’ episodes.  The first is “The Arrival” where we, and the members of Dibley parish, get to meet Ang Reeves’ humourous incarnation of Dawn French’s classic character, the Reverend Geraldine Granger, “a babe with a bob cut and a magnificent bosom”.

Auditioning: Advice For Actors

A guide for those who are new to the theatre scene, or who just want some advice on where to get that extra "something" to give you an edge over the competition.

For a little while now, I've been wanting to compose a piece on auditions.  I've been involved in the community theatre scene for almost 6 years now, both onstage and behind the scenes but this year I thought I'd have my first crack at directing a play.  Directing really made me think about acting in ways I never would have done previously.  There were the obvious, expected insights like being able to see the "bigger picture" of the stage and watching characters interact with one another.  But then there were the auditions.  Being on "the other side" of the audition panel opened my eyes up to some horrendous audition flaws that I am definitely guilty of myself.  I want to share what I have learnt, from my own experiences with acting and directing, and also with the help of someone a lot more experienced than me when it comes to wearing the director's hat.

Interested In Taking On A Production Role?

Musoc is looking for some new faces to join the production team for their March 2012 show, Rent.  In particular they are looking for creative designers, choreographers, and producers.  This is an excellent opportunity for anyone wanting to have a go at a backstage role or who is interested in theatre but might not be so enthused about performing.

You don't necessarily need to have previous experience but they do need people who are committed, enthusiastic and organised.
If you're an artsy, creative type then you might be interested in set or costume design; if you are a bit OCD about being organised then producing would be right for you, and if you're an experienced dancer and natural leader, you might be just the choreographer Musoc is looking for.

Theatre really does have something for everyone, and this is an awesome chance for people who don't usually consider themselves "thespians" to give it a go.  If any of the above roles sound like something you might be interested in, check out the Musoc website or email their secretary, Seamus (secretary@musoc.org.nz), to let them know you're keen.
